Build
304 stainless steel kettle body and lid, plastic base. Wooden handles are either Walnut or Maple.
Design
Its well designed and visually accessible display shows both the target and the current temperature by default and clearly indicates when the temperature control shifts into “hold” mode. While beauty is in the eye of the beholder, we find the space capsule-shaped kettle body, antler-like handle and turntable-reminiscent base add up to a handsome, if not iconic, addition to the modern coffee station.
Handle and spout
When the kettle is lifted from the base and returned, both the timer and the current temperature continue to display, unlike other kettles that stop the timer at the point the kettle is replaced on the base. Even the EKG’s lid design — wide, slightly concave, secure yet still easy to open — is indicative of the refreshing level of consideration that runs top to bottom through the entire user experience.
Switches
Another example is a pair of physical switches hidden on one side of the base, each of which performs a simple, seldom-needed task: one toggles the display between Celsius/Fahrenheit and one turns the “Hold” feature on or off, in both cases sparing us what might otherwise be tedious or obscure digital procedures.
Heat setting
The EKG sports a very narrow gooseneck stem and angled handle which promote precision pours. It also has continuous heat settings to dial-in the perfect water temperature for extraction as well as a built-in stopwatch to time the process. If this isn’t enough control for you, this model is also Bluetooth enabled so you can manage these variables on your phone.
Boil Time
Our boil time tests are simple. We start with four cups of 57° F water, we set the machine to 201° F — the average boiling temperature at our location — and we turn the machine on at the same time as a stopwatch. At 6 min, 38 sec the Fellow is quite slow to achieve a boil. Interestingly, the kettle reaches ~199° F in 5 min, 30 sec but requires another minute to make the remaining few degrees.
Pouring
If your goal is to make drip coffee, you can’t get a better pour than that delivered by the EKG. This model has a very narrow diameter spout with a fluted tip that produces a slow pour rate in an even stream. Thanks to the gooseneck spout (which pulls water from the bottom of the reservoir) and articulated handle, this kettle is also exceptionally well balanced. Both characteristics make the methodical circular pouring technique required for quality extraction an easy task.
Pour-Over Instructions
Fill with water and set temperature
Fill kettle to just below handle. Heat water until temperature reaches optimal brew range (195°-205°F depending on your preferences) on LCD screen.
Place Freshly Ground Beans
For a 12 oz cup, weigh 24 grams of beans (about 3 tablespoons). Grind coffee to a medium coarseness – the consistency of coarse sand.
Prepare the dripper
Place filter in a pour-over dripper on a cup or carafe. Pour enough hot water to fully wet filter and warm dripper. Empty the carafe of water.
Add coffee
Dump your coffee grinds into the dripper and shake lightly to flatten for a more even pour. Make sure to read ahead the next steps before starting to brew!
Timing is right
Once you’re ready to brew, hold Stagg EKG’s main button 2 seconds. This will start the Brew Stopwatch. After the 3 second countdown, follow the Brew Stopwatch for your bloom and pour.
The bloom is key
Start pouring at the center of dripper, working your way out to the sides. Pour about 50 grams of water, or 2 times the amount of coffee you use. Wait 30 seconds for coffee to “bloom” and release CO2.
The perfect pour
Continue pouring evenly from the center of the dripper, outward in a circular path. Pouring should take an additional 2:30 – 3 minutes. Stop once you reach 12 oz or 355 grams.
How to clean Fellow Stagg EKG electric kettle?
• Before cleaning, be sure the base is unplugged and the kettle has cooled completely. Empty any remaining water from the kettle.
• Wash the inside of the kettle with soapy water and rinse. NEVER IMMERSE THE KETTLE IN WATER OR OTHER LIQUIDS.
• Do not place in a dishwasher.
• Wipe the exterior of the kettle and base with a damp cloth or sponge and dry. Do not use abrasive soaps, cleansers, or scouring pads on any part of the kettle as it may damage the finish.
• Over time, the kettle may heat up but won’t boil; this may be due to scaling and mineral deposits which can build up inside the kettle depending on your use and the hardness of the water in your area. When this happens, it’s time for descaling. Use a scale/lime remover and follow its manufacturer’s directions.
Storage
• Clean and dry all parts before storing. Store the kettle in its box or in a clean, dry place.
• Never wrap the power cord around the kettle.

The Stagg EKG Kettle: a story in three parts.
1. I ordered the kettle from Amazon. It was ludicrously spendy for me, but so beautiful. Nothing else on the market comes close. And given the repeated heat waves in the Northeast this summer, I wanted a kettle that could heat my water for coffee without adding heat to the house. When it finally arrived, I unpacked it, ooohed and aahhed at the beauty, added water, plugged it in and…. nothing. No LCD, no heating, simply.. nothing. Sighing heavily, I assumed it was an anomaly and sent it back. I ordered a replacement version that same day.
2. Take two: a few days later, the second Stagg kettle arrives from Amazon. Unpack, plug it in…. aaaaand nothing. Double check the plug, move it to different outlets, reset said outlets – finally, for reasons unbeknownst to me, the LCD lights up with “Fellows.” But nothing further. (I’ve now hit the “on” button about a zillion times). So, in frustration I tweet, Facebook IM and send a message the Fellows Support folks on their website.
The Fellows customer service rep got back to me within the hour, ***from his vacation*** to help me out. Said that definitely shouldn’t be happening and said, “Please let me send you one directly from our warehouse.” Asked for the Amazon order numbers, as he thought perhaps there is something in Amazon’s handling that is affecting performance of the kettle.
In the meantime, I’ve gotten Kettle #2 to actually heat water to the boiling point once (on the 100th try or so), so I message the CSR back and say “Maybe it’s working?” Next attempt? The LCD said “no water” and refused to do anything. Back it goes. I returned to the CSR and requested a kettle direct from Fellows: I was happy to pay for a replacement kettle, but he insisted on sending it free of charge to compensate for my hassle.
3. EUREKA! The third-time’s-a-charm kettle arrived about 3 weeks ago. It has worked like a charm ever since the first minute. Heats like a dream, quickly, efficiently. Holds the temperature accurately to about 1 degree. Pours easily, smoothly and effortlessly. My husband (who initially scoffed at the price) is increasingly enamored of this kettle, and says frequently (sheepishly) how much he loves it. It is everything all of the 5-star reviews say and more.
So, finally although I’ve had very good luck with Amazon over the years, my advice to you on this one is: go directly to the source. You won’t regret it. And a very huge shoutout to Fellows support for A++ customer service!
By Amazon ReviewerCustomer asked on Stagg EKG electric kettle
What materials is the whole set made off?
Tough plastic handle on the kettle and lid. Stainless steel interior. A small soft plastic o-ring (less than 1/4 inch in diameter) around the temperature sensor is the only plastic that comes in contact with the water. I’ve been drinking delicate teas made with this kettle for months and have never noticed any off odours or flavours.
Is the kettle insulated?
The kettle is not insulated — it is one layer of stainless steel. The exterior does get quite hot when the water is heated up to +200°F. As long as you’re aware that the surface is hot and hold the kettle such that your knuckles or hand don’t touch the kettle while pouring, it should not be a problem.
When this reaches the desired temperature does it auto keep warm at the same temperature?
Once the kettle reaches the desired temperature, it will hold the temperature for 5 minutes or until the kettle is lifted from the base. If you’d like the kettle to maintain temperature between pours, turn the hold switch on. With the hold switch on, the kettle will maintain the desired temperature for up to an hour before turning off.
Will it work with a smart switch?
Good question! For safety reasons, the kettle will not turn on if “switched on” by a smart plug. We are working to see if we can integrate scheduled turn on since it has been frequently requested by customers. The boil time from room temperature water is only about 5 minutes, so even without the timer it is quick to get up to temperature!
Is this lead and cadmium free?
Yes! All of our kettles are made with high grade 304 stainless steel. The black matte kettle is coated in an FDA food safe high-temperature paint, which is baked onto the stainless steel. The mirror finish of the polished and copper versions are just the raw stainless steel material itself. All our lids, whether metal or silicone, are BPA free, FDA food safe, polypropylene plastic.
